What is a Dental Exam?

A dental exam is a physical inspection of your teeth and gums, not only to identify potential dental issues but also to detect problems that might impact your overall health. There are different types of examinations that Dr. Huff performs: comprehensive dental examination, detailed and extensive examination for complex dental care, comprehensive orofacial pain examination, recall examination, and problem-focused examination.

A comprehensive dental examination in this practice includes screening for TMJ disorders, bite disorders, muscle disorders, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. It also includes a detailed examination of the teeth and supporting structures, including charting and condition review of previous fillings, crowns, and prostheses. A consultation related to the findings of the exam and the development of a basic treatment plan is also included in the comprehensive examination fee. Extensive needs may require requiring an additional exam for complex planning.

A detailed and extensive examination for complex dental care is based on the findings of a previous examination. This type of exam often involves collaboration with other healthcare professionals, and may involve interpretation of advanced diagnostic studies, and other services. The fee for this type of examination is in addition to the initial examination.

Orofacial pain that falls within Dr. Huff’s specialty of orofacial pain requires examination of substantially different focus. This type of examination is performed either after referral to our practice from another clinician or after an orofacial pain condition is determined during regular dental care by Dr. Huff. It involves an in-depth evaluation of the muscles of the head and neck, the TMJs, psychosocial components contributing to pain, sleep factors as they relate to chronic pain, etc.

A problem-focused examination is limited in scope to a patient’s chief dental complaint. Often this is called an “emergency exam.” Minimal treatment, if any, may be provided at the time of this examination to stabilize or manage urgent painful conditions until a more definitive treatment plan can be developed through one of the other types of examinations listed above. By definition, this type of examination is not in detail.

Why Regular Dental Exams Matter:

  • Early Detection: Catching problems early, whether it’s a tiny cavity or early-stage gum disease, makes them easier and often less expensive to treat.
  • Maintaining Oral Health: Regular check-ups are essential in preventing oral issues from developing.
  • Systemic Health Check: Some diseases or medical conditions, such as diabetes, might manifest symptoms in the mouth.
